5. Passage 14 Shortly after graduation, it is time for you to start the next phase of your life. You will begin your first “real job.” Generally speaking, most of what you have learned in school will not prepare you for this. There is a big difference between being a student and being an employee. Certainly, more will be expected of you. The best career-related advice I ever received came from my former boss on my first day of work. She told me to listen and observe before suggesting any changes. I took that advice and have used it in other situations, both in and out of the workplace. While innovation is a good thing, it is important to be mindful of dynamics of the workplace. If you are entering an environment where routines are already in place, a newcomer walking in and talking about “better ways” to do things, will often be met with negative reactions. Why? First, you know nothing about why they do things the way they do. Second, you haven't gained the trust of your co-workers. Finally, people, by nature, are threatened by changes. By listening and observing, you will gain a lot. You will learn about the environment of which you are now a part. You will find out more about the people you are working with. You may save yourself from making a major, public mistake—you are the new kid on the block while your co-workers have been around longer. You can learn from their collective experience. This passage is useful in helping you.
A. to find a job as quickly as possible
B. tofind a satisfactory first ―real‖ job
C. to get promoted soon
D. to leave a good impression on your co-workers

1. Passage 7 Greek soldiers sent messages by turning their shields toward the sun. The flashes reflected light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, but other Greek soldiers could understand the message. Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance. In Africa, people learn to send messages by beating on a series of large drums. Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles. In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms. Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speeches sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds. According to this passage, the Roman way of communication depended very much upon( ).
A. fine weather
B. high tower
C. the spelling system
D. arm movements

4. Passage 9 What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage. Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts. From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the last chance of serious injury. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building. Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leak into the room. On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall. Open the window so that( )if the building is on fire.
A. you can get fresh air
B. you can call for help
C. you can easily jump off
D. you can be seen first

2. Passage 19 Throughout her working life, a ship — like a motorcar — must be serviced regularly if she is to remain efficient. After a period at sea she must be overall checked and any necessary repairs must be made. There are also instances when a ship must be converted from being one kind of carrier to another. Most of today‘s oil, for example, is carried by huge super-tankers. The smaller tankers, many of which are still in good condition, can be converted into bulk carriers(散货船) for the transport of sugar, coal or ore. Conversion or repair work is carried out in a dry dock, a huge hole cut into the ground and lined with concrete. At one end are large gates separating the dock from the river or sea. When these gates are opened, water pours into the dock and fills it. A ship can then enter the dock, where it is carefully fastened in an upright position. When the ship is positioned inside the dock, the gates are closed and the water is pumped out. The vessel slowly settles on to wooden blocks. Wooden supporters are put in position between the ship and the sides of the dock to prevent her from rolling over. Great care is taken to make sure that the ship rests evenly on the keel(龙骨)blocks to prevent damage being done. As soon as the ship is firmly positioned, repair or conversion work can begin on her body or superstructure. Many smaller tankers have been converted into bulk carriers because( ).
A. there is a shortage of oil in the world
B. large amounts of sugar, coal and ore is needed in the world market
