3. Passage 4 Do you know who Benjamin Banneker was and what he did? Benjamin Banneker was a self-educated scientist at a time when most African Americans were slaves. Born a free black man in the British Colony of Maryland in 1731, he received some formal education, but he mostly borrowed books and taught himself science and mathematics. At 22, he borrowed a pocket watch, and without any training, figured out how to carve a working wooden clock that chimed each hour. Because of this clock, he became well known and people would visit him just to see his creation. Banneker ran his family farm from many years, but when he was in his late 50s, a neighbor‘s son lent him a telescope. He became interested in astronomy, the study of the planets and stars, and again taught himself a new science. He made calculations of tides, sunrises and sunsets, and even predicted an eclipse. For several years he published an almanac of these calculations. Today, he is best known for publishing six almanacs, called ―Benjamin Banneker‘s Almanac‖ between 1792 and 1797. In the 1790s, Banneker also helped survey and lay out the land for Washington, D. C., which became the nation‘s capital. For a look at Banneker‘s amazing life, visit the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum in Ellicott City, Maryland. He became famous at the age of 22 because of.

4. Passage 19 Throughout her working life, a ship — like a motorcar — must be serviced regularly if she is to remain efficient. After a period at sea she must be overall checked and any necessary repairs must be made. There are also instances when a ship must be converted from being one kind of carrier to another. Most of today‘s oil, for example, is carried by huge super-tankers. The smaller tankers, many of which are still in good condition, can be converted into bulk carriers(散货船) for the transport of sugar, coal or ore. Conversion or repair work is carried out in a dry dock, a huge hole cut into the ground and lined with concrete. At one end are large gates separating the dock from the river or sea. When these gates are opened, water pours into the dock and fills it. A ship can then enter the dock, where it is carefully fastened in an upright position. When the ship is positioned inside the dock, the gates are closed and the water is pumped out. The vessel slowly settles on to wooden blocks. Wooden supporters are put in position between the ship and the sides of the dock to prevent her from rolling over. Great care is taken to make sure that the ship rests evenly on the keel(龙骨)blocks to prevent damage being done. As soon as the ship is firmly positioned, repair or conversion work can begin on her body or superstructure. What do you think will happen to a dry dock when the repairs to a ship are completed?

4. Passage 11 Many children use the Internet to get useful knowledge and information, and to relax in their free time. But some of them are not using in a good way. Here are some rules to make sure you are safe and have fun on the Internet. Make rules for Internet use with your parents. For example, when you can go online, for how long and what activities you can go online. Don‘t give your password to anyone else, and never leak out the following information---your real name, home address, age, school, phone number or other personal information. Check with your parents before giving out a credit card number. Never send a photo of yourself to someone in e-mail unless your parents say it‘s OK. Check with your parents before going into a chat room. Different chat rooms have different rules and attract different kinds of people. You and your parents must make sure it‘s a right place for you. Never agree to meet someone you met on the Internet without your parent‘s permission. Never meet anyone you met on line alone. Always remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Treat everyone online as strangers. If something you see or read online makes you uncomfortable, leave the site. Tell a parent or teacher right away. Treat other people as you‗d like to be treated. Never use bad language. Remember—not everything you read on the Internet is true. If your parents don‘t agree, never( ).

5. Passage 14 Shortly after graduation, it is time for you to start the next phase of your life. You will begin your first “real job.” Generally speaking, most of what you have learned in school will not prepare you for this. There is a big difference between being a student and being an employee. Certainly, more will be expected of you. The best career-related advice I ever received came from my former boss on my first day of work. She told me to listen and observe before suggesting any changes. I took that advice and have used it in other situations, both in and out of the workplace. While innovation is a good thing, it is important to be mindful of dynamics of the workplace. If you are entering an environment where routines are already in place, a newcomer walking in and talking about “better ways” to do things, will often be met with negative reactions. Why? First, you know nothing about why they do things the way they do. Second, you haven't gained the trust of your co-workers. Finally, people, by nature, are threatened by changes. By listening and observing, you will gain a lot. You will learn about the environment of which you are now a part. You will find out more about the people you are working with. You may save yourself from making a major, public mistake—you are the new kid on the block while your co-workers have been around longer. You can learn from their collective experience. This passage is useful in helping you.

2. Passage 15 There is a commonly held myth that Einstein was an underachiever at school, but it really isn't true. While he may have had difficulties with languages, Einstein excelled in physics, mathematics and music. Einstein held many patents and was a keen inventor. While working at Swiss patent office in Bern he took it upon himself to write his own scientific papers in his spare time, mostly at weekends and in the evenings after work. 1905 was Einstein's miracle year. During this year he wrote three fundamental papers, any of which would have guaranteed him immortality in the world of physics. His first was on a new understanding of the structure of light. Einstein argued that light is composed of small particles of energy, called photons, as well as oscillating waves. The second paper built upon the theory of kinetics. Einstein explained how atoms were responsible for the buffeting of particles of material in suspension, like cigarette smoke suspended in air. This paper presented the first direct evidence for the existence of atoms, vindicating an idea that had been around for over 2000 years. His third paper of 1905 was ―On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies‖. Here Einstein derived the theory of ―special relativity‖. In a supplementary paper four months later, he formulated the famous equation, E=mc2, where mass and energy are equivalent, showing that a very small amount of mass converts to a huge amount of energy. This is the driving force behind atomic bombs, and all the stars in the Universe. What does the word ―immortality‖ (line 4, Pa. 2) mean in the passage?
