9-1 One of the most important things you can do in the days before a job interview is to work on developing a positive attitude. It’s natural to feel nervous, but a positive mind-set will help you to perform well and to convince the interviewer that you are the right person for the job. In order to feel positive, you need to examine the way you think. If you think things like “I can’t...” or “That’s impossible” you need to change the way you speak to yourself. Instead of thinking “I can’t do public speaking”, tell yourself “I find public speaking difficult, but I’m going to work on it and get better”. It is well-known that preparation will help you to successfully answer interview questions. But did you know that preparing well for an interview can also help you to feel much more confident? On the morning of your interview, do everything you can to make yourself feel relaxed. Do you have a favourite song which makes you feel good? Put it on at top volume and listen to the words. Treat yourself to a healthy breakfast and remind yourself of all you have achieved so far. Finally, tell yourself you are looking forward to, and not fearing, the interview. Finally, see the interview as an opportunity to learn. Try not to think of it in terms of getting the job or not getting the job. See it as a way of getting valuable interview experience and making important connections in your industry. 82. According to the article, why is it important to have a positive mind-set?
A. It will improve your interview performance.
B. It will help you to feel less worried.
C. It will make you look better.
D. It will help you to think more clearly.

2-1 Advice from a Hiring Manager As a hiring manager I’ve conducted hundreds of interviews over the years. I believe this puts me in a good position to offer advice about how to make the best possible impression at interview. First of all, it is a good idea to arrive early for the interview, but not too early. 10-15 minutes before your interview starts is ideal. Candidates often believe that they should arrive as early as possible for an interview. However, arriving too early can be inconvenient for the hiring manager, who may well be interviewing other candidates. Once you have arrived, make sure you’re polite to everyone you meet, especially the receptionist. As a hiring manager, I often check with the receptionist after interviews to find out which candidates were most polite. It is important to me that team members will get on well with everyone they work with. Another important tip is this: if the interviewer tries to make small talks with you (by talking about the weather for example), make sure you are friendly. I often ask candidates about how their journey was, as their response will tell me what they are like as a person. Finally, bring a copy of your résumé. So many candidates forget to mention important dates or qualifications. If you have your résumé in front of you, it can really help you to answer challenging questions. Follow this advice, research the job and the position and you’ll be in with a good chance of passing the interview. 11. Why does the writer think the advice about interviews will be useful?
A. The writer teaches a course on interview skills.
B. The writer has written a book about making a good impression at job interviews.
C. The writer always performs well in interviews.
D. The writer’s job involves interviewing people.

5-2 We all know that employers check out the social media accounts of potential candidates, but did you know that they also look at staff accounts? Three months ago, I had just started a job in a restaurant. The first Saturday I worked there we had a staff shortage as quite a few people were off ill. At lunch time, I was left to serve about 20 customers by myself! As you can imagine, service was slow, and a few customers were quite rude to me. By the end of the day, I had a terrible headache, sore feet and was in a very bad mood. I just wanted to let off some steam, so I went home and wrote a blog post about the terrible day I'd had. It was supposed to be funny, but I did bad-mouth some of the customers, especially a large woman wearing a purple coat who had shouted at me because her coffee was cold. Then I shared the blog post to my social media accounts. That was a big mistake. I had forgotten that I was friends with my boss on social media. Unfortunately for me, the woman in the purple coat who I had described in my blog post turned out to be his wife! I was called into my boss’ office and fired the next day. What did I learn from this? Never write anything negative about your work on social media: it will always come back to bite you. 49. Why did the writer blog about her bad day?
A. She wanted her boss to read it.
B. She felt fed-up and wanted to make herself feel better.
C. She wanted a publisher to see it and offer her a writing job.
D. She wanted her customers to read it and feel sorry for her.

9-2 How to start strong at work You’ve had a successful job interview. Congratulations! What comes next is equally important to your chances of career success - your first day on the job. How do you make a positive impact on your new colleagues and boss? Remember the preparation you did before your interview? You’ll need to be just as well-prepared for your first day of a new job. This means thinking about the questions you will need to ask in order to be successful in your role. On your first day, make sure you arrive for work at least 15 minutes early. If you haven’t done the commute before, practise it once or twice during rush hour. This will help to prevent you being surprised by heavy traffic. Make sure you introduce yourself to your new colleagues. Prepare a short introduction, saying who you are, where you worked before and what your new role is. Whatever you do, don’t spend the day alone, as this can become a habit which is hard to break. Remember to put your cell-phone on silent. You need to be 100 percent present at work, especially on your first day. You’ll find it harder to connect with your colleagues if you are busy checking your phone for messages. Finally, make sure to learn the unwritten rules of your office. Finding out about where to wash your coffee cups will show that you are the kind of person who cares about the workspace you share with others. 87. What advice does the writer give about preparing for the first day of a new job?
A. Don’t be over-prepared or ask too many questions.
B. Prepare answers to any questions you might be asked.
C. Think of the questions you will need to ask about your job.
D. Find out information about your new colleagues through social media.
