9-2 How to start strong at work You’ve had a successful job interview. Congratulations! What comes next is equally important to your chances of career success - your first day on the job. How do you make a positive impact on your new colleagues and boss? Remember the preparation you did before your interview? You’ll need to be just as well-prepared for your first day of a new job. This means thinking about the questions you will need to ask in order to be successful in your role. On your first day, make sure you arrive for work at least 15 minutes early. If you haven’t done the commute before, practise it once or twice during rush hour. This will help to prevent you being surprised by heavy traffic. Make sure you introduce yourself to your new colleagues. Prepare a short introduction, saying who you are, where you worked before and what your new role is. Whatever you do, don’t spend the day alone, as this can become a habit which is hard to break. Remember to put your cell-phone on silent. You need to be 100 percent present at work, especially on your first day. You’ll find it harder to connect with your colleagues if you are busy checking your phone for messages. Finally, make sure to learn the unwritten rules of your office. Finding out about where to wash your coffee cups will show that you are the kind of person who cares about the workspace you share with others. 87. What advice does the writer give about preparing for the first day of a new job?

A、 Don’t be over-prepared or ask too many questions.

B、 Prepare answers to any questions you might be asked.

C、 Think of the questions you will need to ask about your job.

D、 Find out information about your new colleagues through social media.

答案:C

6-2 New year, new goal! For the past five years, I made the same promise to myself every spring: “I am going to get into shape”. Each year, I promised myself that I was going to lose weight and go down two dress sizes, so that I would look good (or at least normal) on the beach. However, it was the same story every year. Just two weeks after I’d made the resolution, I went back to my old bad habits. This year I decided to do things differently. I realized that my goal of dropping two dress sizes was unrealistic, and probably even unhealthy. When I examined my goal, I decided that it was too short-sighted to be meaningful. Why would I work so hard for just two weeks on the beach? When I thought about it, I realized it was more important to be healthy and strong than to look slim. Examining and changing my goal made a big difference. Instead of trying to lose weight, a friend and I decided we’d run a marathon in July. We planned our exercise schedule together, which was really motivating. We ate healthily, without worrying about our weight. Instead of obsessing about how we looked, we focused on our running performance. So, what happened? Not only did I manage to run the marathon, I also went down a dress size. What did I take away from this experience? What we think we need isn’t always what’s good for us. It pays to examine our goals. 58. How did the writer change her goal?

7-2 My life as a pet food tester When I tell people that I work as a pet food tester, I get a lot of different responses. Some people laugh, some look disgusted, and others ask me what the food tastes like and how much of it I have to eat. It certainly is an interesting job. However, it’s also a job which needs a high level of skill and qualifications. I have a degree in nutrition, so I know about the kind of food that pets need to stay healthy. An important part of my job is writing reports about the food I taste and making suggestions about how it can be improved. Tasting the food is just one part of what I do. How do I go about tasting the pet food? First of all, I smell it carefully. The food has to smell nice, otherwise the animals won’t want to eat it. Also, pet owners don’t want bad-smelling food in their homes! After smelling the food, I taste it. I keep it in my mouth for a few minutes, taking notes on how it tastes and how it feels in my mouth. It’s really important the food tastes good. If I don’t like it, then probably the animals won’t like it either. The food isn’t the best part of my job, but there are other perks—like the salary. I earn $50, 000 a year. Now that leaves a good taste in my mouth! 69. Why is it important the food tastes good?

8-1 Sometimes, interviewers will ask questions to find out more about the skills you have. For example, employers might want to see if you are a good team worker or if you are able to solve problems. A good way to answer these questions is with the STAR acronym. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result. Here is how this works. Imagine you are asked to talk about a time you showed leadership skills. Using the STAR technique, you might say something like: “Two years ago I was made captain of the basketball team. We had a big competition coming up, and the team hadn’t won a match in ten years. I decided to start an intensive training program. We trained every night for three hours. It was hard work, but I motivated my team members by giving them small rewards, like candy, when they scored a basket. In the end we won the competition and now we’re the most successful basketball team in our city!” The story is a good example of the STAR technique. It describes the situation (being captain of the basketball team) the task (having to win the competition) the action (motivating the team) and the result (winning). It’s impossible to predict exactly what you’ll be asked at an interview, but If you practice talking about some of your work and study experiences using the STAR technique, your answers will be well-structured and more likely to make a good impression.74 What skill does the STAR example in the article illustrate?

3-1 Internships are a great way for graduates to get valuable work experience. However, they don’t always go smoothly. To find out more about potential internship problems, and how to solve them, read on. Being given trivial work For ambitious interns, being given small tasks such as making tea can be very frustrating. Just remember that all tasks, no matter how small, are important to your company’s success. Complete these tasks as well as you can—you will soon be given more interesting things to do. Feeling worried about asking questions It can be hard to ask questions when everybody else seems to know exactly what they're doing. However, everybody knows that you are an intern and they do not expect you to know everything. So, focus on what you need to know and ask the questions you need to ask. Getting too much work Some companies hire fewer interns than they need. This can result in your feeling overworked. Speak to your manager if think you have too much to do. Perhaps the problem is your poor time management skills, and in this case, your manager will help you to become more organized. Or, if you have been given too much work, they will try to reduce it. Finally remember that starting a new job is always challenging, but with time it becomes easier. Keep a positive attitude and you will soon settle into your new role. 25. According to the writer, what should you do if you feel your workload is too heavy?

5-2 We all know that employers check out the social media accounts of potential candidates, but did you know that they also look at staff accounts? Three months ago, I had just started a job in a restaurant. The first Saturday I worked there we had a staff shortage as quite a few people were off ill. At lunch time, I was left to serve about 20 customers by myself! As you can imagine, service was slow, and a few customers were quite rude to me. By the end of the day, I had a terrible headache, sore feet and was in a very bad mood. I just wanted to let off some steam, so I went home and wrote a blog post about the terrible day I'd had. It was supposed to be funny, but I did bad-mouth some of the customers, especially a large woman wearing a purple coat who had shouted at me because her coffee was cold. Then I shared the blog post to my social media accounts. That was a big mistake. I had forgotten that I was friends with my boss on social media. Unfortunately for me, the woman in the purple coat who I had described in my blog post turned out to be his wife! I was called into my boss’ office and fired the next day. What did I learn from this? Never write anything negative about your work on social media: it will always come back to bite you. 48. Why was there a staff shortage?
