5. Passage 20 Clifford Stoll ran a computer system in Berkelely, California. As a system administrator, he kept a close eye on the records. One day, Stoll found something strange in the payment record. There was a 75 cents mistake. One of the thousands of users had used the system for 75 worth of time and not paid for it. It might sound like very little money to worry about. But that 75 cents was the first clue Stoll had to a much bigger problem — that a hacker(黑客)had broken into Stoll‘s computer system. Who was it? Stoll spent the next year trying to find out. During that time the hacker used the system in Berkelely as a starting point to break into military computer systems all over the United States. Stoll had to keep track of the hacker‘s activities on the computer without the hacker‘s knowing someone was watching him. Stoll even made up huge files of false information so the hacker would have lots to read. When the hacker spent long time reading, the telephone company was able to trace the lines. After a year, the hacker was traced back to his computer — in Germany. He was later caught by the German police. Why did Stoll make up huge files of false information?

A、 He wanted to give the hacker a lesson.

B、 It would help the telephone company trace the line.

C、 It would give the police more time to find out the hacker.

D、 He could watch the hacker‘s activities more closely.

答案:B

4. Passage 11 Many children use the Internet to get useful knowledge and information, and to relax in their free time. But some of them are not using in a good way. Here are some rules to make sure you are safe and have fun on the Internet. Make rules for Internet use with your parents. For example, when you can go online, for how long and what activities you can go online. Don‘t give your password to anyone else, and never leak out the following information---your real name, home address, age, school, phone number or other personal information. Check with your parents before giving out a credit card number. Never send a photo of yourself to someone in e-mail unless your parents say it‘s OK. Check with your parents before going into a chat room. Different chat rooms have different rules and attract different kinds of people. You and your parents must make sure it‘s a right place for you. Never agree to meet someone you met on the Internet without your parent‘s permission. Never meet anyone you met on line alone. Always remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Treat everyone online as strangers. If something you see or read online makes you uncomfortable, leave the site. Tell a parent or teacher right away. Treat other people as you‗d like to be treated. Never use bad language. Remember—not everything you read on the Internet is true. If your parents don‘t agree, never( ).

2. Passage 17 Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to cope with life changes and daily hassles. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, reveal that the presence of social support helps people fend off illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health likely. Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives, and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support ― financial aid, material resources and needed services — that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems. Research shows that people‘s physical and mental health( ).

4. Passage 16 Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there‘s a big difference between ―being a writer‖, and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. ―You‘ve got to want to write,‖ I say to them, ―not want to be a writer.‖ The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune, there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me a place in a New York apartment building. It didn‘t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn‘t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn‘t going to be one of those people who die wondering – what if I would keep putting my dream to the last even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there. ―...people who die wondering, what if‖ ( Para. 3) refers to ―those( )‖.

Get on a bicycle and ride around your neighborhood. You may discover something new all around you. Stopping and getting off a bike is easier than stopping and getting out of your car. You can bike to work and benefit from the enjoyable exercise without polluting the environment. You don‘t even have to ride all the way. Folding bikes work well for people who ride the train. Just fold the bike and take it with you. You can do the same on an airplane. A folding bike can be packed in a suitcase. You can also take a common bike with you when you fly. But be sure to look for information by getting on airline websites. Not all airlines are bicycle-friendly to travelers. Health Benefits of Bicycling: It helps to prevent heart diseases. 2. Passage 4 Do you know who Benjamin Banneker was and what he did? Benjamin Banneker was a self-educated scientist at a time when most African Americans were slaves. Born a free black man in the British Colony of Maryland in 1731, he received some formal education, but he mostly borrowed books and taught himself science and mathematics. At 22, he borrowed a pocket watch, and without any training, figured out how to carve a working wooden clock that chimed each hour. Because of this clock, he became well known and people would visit him just to see his creation. Banneker ran his family farm from many years, but when he was in his late 50s, a neighbor‘s son lent him a telescope. He became interested in astronomy, the study of the planets and stars, and again taught himself a new science. He made calculations of tides, sunrises and sunsets, and even predicted an eclipse. For several years he published an almanac of these calculations. Today, he is best known for publishing six almanacs, called ―Benjamin Banneker‘s Almanac‖ between 1792 and 1797. In the 1790s, Banneker also helped survey and lay out the land for Washington, D. C., which became the nation‘s capital. For a look at Banneker‘s amazing life, visit the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park & Museum in Ellicott City, Maryland. What subjects did Benjamin teach himself?
