2. Passage 13 The favorite food in the United States is hamburger. The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast food restaurant. At a fast food restaurant, people order their food, wait a few minutes, and carry it to their tables themselves. People also take their food out of the restaurant and eat it in their cars or in their homes. At some fast food restaurants, people can order their food, pay for it and pick it up without leaving their cars. There are many kinds of fast food restaurants in the United States. The greatest in number sell hamburgers, French fries and so on. They are popular food among Americans. Besides, Italian food, chicken, seafood and ice-cream are very popular, too. The idea of a fast food restaurant is so popular that nearly every kind of food can be found in one. Fast food restaurants are popular because they reflect American life style. Customers can wear any type of dress when they go to a fast food place. Second, they are fast. People who are busy do not want to spend time preparing their own food or waiting while someone prepares it. In fast food restaurants the food is usually ready before the customer even orders it. Finally most food in a fast food restaurant is not expensive. Therefore people are able to buy and eat at a fast food restaurant often, while they may not be able to go to a more expensive restaurant very often. What do people do when they come to a fast food restaurant?

A. They order and eat their food at the restaurant.

B. They buy and take their food out and eat it in their cars or in their homes.

C. They order, pay for and get their food in their cars.

D. They do one of the three above-mentioned things.

1. Passage 16 Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there‘s a big difference between ―being a writer‖, and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. ―You‘ve got to want to write,‖ I say to them, ―not want to be a writer.‖ The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune, there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me a place in a New York apartment building. It didn‘t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn‘t gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn‘t going to be one of those people who die wondering – what if I would keep putting my dream to the last even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the Shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there. The passage is meant to .

A. warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience

B. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer

C. show young people it‘s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fame

D. encourage young people to pursue a writing career

5. Passage 15 There is a commonly held myth that Einstein was an underachiever at school, but it really isn't true. While he may have had difficulties with languages, Einstein excelled in physics, mathematics and music. Einstein held many patents and was a keen inventor. While working at Swiss patent office in Bern he took it upon himself to write his own scientific papers in his spare time, mostly at weekends and in the evenings after work. 1905 was Einstein's miracle year. During this year he wrote three fundamental papers, any of which would have guaranteed him immortality in the world of physics. His first was on a new understanding of the structure of light. Einstein argued that light is composed of small particles of energy, called photons, as well as oscillating waves. The second paper built upon the theory of kinetics. Einstein explained how atoms were responsible for the buffeting of particles of material in suspension, like cigarette smoke suspended in air. This paper presented the first direct evidence for the existence of atoms, vindicating an idea that had been around for over 2000 years. His third paper of 1905 was ―On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies‖. Here Einstein derived the theory of ―special relativity‖. In a supplementary paper four months later, he formulated the famous equation, E=mc2, where mass and energy are equivalent, showing that a very small amount of mass converts to a huge amount of energy. This is the driving force behind atomic bombs, and all the stars in the Universe. Which of the following words can be used to best describe the author‘s attitude towards Einstein?

A. Skeptical.

B. Critical.

C. Admiring.

D. Exaggerated.

2、Translation 2 19(2)Everybody knows that women and men communicate differently. Women are more able to manipulate their facial expressions than men. However, the results are reversed when it comes to expressing anger. Women have a tendency to catch others‘ emotions, although men can hide their expressions better than females. Women are more inclined to face each other and make eye contact when talking. Men are more likely to look away from each other. When in a discussion, men are likely to debate and talk about a range of topics while the ladies may talk at length about one topic. Understanding the difference in communication between men and women might help us communicate with each other in a better way.

4. Passage 9 What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage. Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts. From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible, learn the best way of leaving by windows with the last chance of serious injury. The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building. Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leak into the room. On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement might end in injury. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall. Open the window so that( )if the building is on fire.

A. you can get fresh air

B. you can call for help

C. you can easily jump off

D. you can be seen first
